How to tell if counterfeit: OtterBox Defender for iPhone 6 Plus

UPC: 660543353614

Counterfeits look so much like the real thing, there are only a few details that are different.

The front of the packaging.

There is no difference except the color bar which is circled. They are very close, but are different.

The colors are so close it is hard to tell. Close up:

The design of the logo used to be different, but new counterfeit designs have it the same as the real one. However some fake ones still show a darker counterfeit logo:

Check out the QR Code too. Fakes usually have the wrong code. Scan it and see where it goes. It if goes to the wrong product, it is fake.

There are two ways to check at the bottom for authenticity.  However the bottom only works sometimes.  I have a had a few fake cases that matched the font 100% and the barcode matched the real UPC.

But most fakes did not do that. If you think you have a fake one, enter the UPC code online and see what product it matches.

The real cases do not have bold font on the right, however this counterfeit matches the real one. Yes, the real case misspelled “Mexico”. It is the real case.

Here is one with bold on the right side:

The case itself is easy to tell though. This is the front. Notice the circles. Those are different.

Close up of the fake one. Notice the lines and how far they go:

Now the real one. The lines are noticeably smaller.

Disregard where is says it is made. Otter makes them in Mexico, China and the US. The counterfeits are also random with a country.

Conclusion:

If your OtterBox matches any of the counterfeit signs here, it is fake. Counterfeits will show at least one flaw.

Still not able to tell if your case is real or not? Leave a comment and I try to help you.

Common mistakes:

1.) Real OtterBoxs do not show flaws and counterfeits do.

I have had many brand new, non-counterfeited cases show major flaws to the design. I have also had many fake cases with perfect design.

2.) You can tell by how dark the Otter appears underneath the logo.

All new counterfeits that I have gotten in late 2014 and eary 2015 have fixed this. Now fake ones match the design perfectly.

3.) Counterfeit cases do not have a serial and real ones do.

That is halfway true. I have not seen a single counterfeit OtterBox that has a serial number. The thing is the vast majority of real OtterBoxs do not have one either. We have over 50 different OtterBox models. Only Samsung’s Note 4 and Galaxy S5 have serial numbers. The iPhone 6 plus sometimes has a serial. So if your case does have a 11 character serial, it is real. Once I see counterfeits having them, I will update this note.

  1. i purchased a otterbox defender case for iphone 6 from amazon last week it had a serial number inside case and barcode checked out ok but had no soft insulation in case sent it back for refund as a fake case also the back of case was not soft feel as stated but hard plastic

  2. I just bought a “new Otterbox” case for my 6 plus and as soon as I opened the packaging I knew it was fake. The screen protector doesn’t even lay flat on the screen. I’ve had a pink and white one for my 5s and that is the color I chose for my 6 plus and the colors are even so far off. The photos here just confirmed it. Definitely returning for a refund.

  3. Just got a otter box for my 6s plus everything with the case checks out but even the belt clip . But the screen as a real bad air pocket under it so bad you can’t really text especially in the center part . Box ha no numbers and the packaging had pictures of rocks on the bottom of it

    • I just bought a new otterbox defender for iPhone 6 Plus and my package has rocks on it too, but it’s real. So don’t always let the packaging fool you.

  4. my upc matches an ottebox symmetry, instead of saying pet it say pete at the bottom and the triangle doesn’t have arrows its just a straight trianglr
