Following ISIS’s defeat at Tel Abyad, Syria, residents of the city were able to smoke cigarettes again. Under ISIS’s rule, smoking was banned. In the 1920’s, public relations expert Edward Bernays created a movement to increase sales of cigarettes for major tobacco companies. He was able to convince woman to smoke in public to demonstrate their freedom from society’s rules and to show they were independent. While most of the Middle East is addicted to tobacco already, if they were not, this video would provide great marketing material for companies. Here in this video we have people smoking for the first time in public since ISIS took over.
